Indo-European and Pre-Greek Influences

The Greek language and culture emerged largely as a result of contact between Indo-European and so-called Pre-Greek populations.  We discuss some outcomes of this interaction and compare the linguistic impact each of these cultures had on the early development of the Greek language through an exploration of various words and names.

Konstantinos Varvarezos is a doctoral candidate in the Mathematics Department of Princeton University working in the areas of knot theory and low dimensional topology.  He was born in Houston Texas to Greek parents.  He studied Mathematics, Classic Greek, and Linguistics at Rice University.  During his studies, he developed a keen interest in historical linguistics and particularly the history of the Greek language. His many other interests include music, chess, history, political science, and philosophy.

This presentation will be in the English Language.
