Lecture on “Life, Evolution, and Human Genetics”

the evolutionPanagiotis Katsonis, Instructor in Molecular and Human Genetics of Baylor College of Medicine, will present a lecture addressed to non-scientists, regarding “Life, Evolution, and Human Genetics”.

The slides presentation will offer an elementary genetics view of our world, covering from the appearance of the first living cell to humans and their diseases, such as cancer. The talk will touch on several fundamental questions about our existence, such as:

  •  What is a living organism and what are the elements of a cell?
  •  How life appeared on Earth?
  •  How the different living species are related to each other?
  •  Is the Genesis creation narrative in conflict with scientific evidence?
  •  Why people look like their relatives and why they may differ from their parents?
  •  Why there are so many diseases and can a disease have different severity in different people?
  •  Why cancer is difficult to treat and how genetic information can help in cancer treatment?

The event is free and open to any interested individual of any background and any age.
