Diaspora Petition for Hagia Sofia

Category: Press Published: 16 July 2020 Hits: 1987
Petision headline

The World Hellenic Diaspora, a project of the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest is asking for all interested to sign the petition at https://appeals.worldhellenicdiaspora.org/ to reverse the decision of the Turkish government that is converting the Hagia Sophia Cathedral to a Mosque on July 24, 2020.

Hagia Sophia was a Christian Orthodox Cathedral and Byzantine Monument for almost one thousand years before the Ottoman occupation of Constantinople in 1453 and was decreed a museum by the secular Ataturk after the establishment of the Turkish state in 1934.

Millions of people of all religions from around the world have visited this 1483-year-old architectural masterpiece where some of the Byzantine iconographies have been restored and the appreciation of faith has served as a powerful symbol of dialogue.

We denounce this decision by a Turkish court and ratified by the Turkish Assembly and President to convert this property of universal value into a mosque and, thus, desecrate its Christian legacy.

By signing this petition, you agree to return Hagia Sophia to its museum status as supported by all international organizations.

We demand from Turkey to maintain the Christian interior and iconography unchanged otherwise international organizations, states and fora will proceed with legal sanctions against the Turkish government and workers who participate in the cultural destruction.

This policy of religious extremism is dangerous and threatens world peace!

We need at least 100,000 signatures to formally petition the White House and US Congress.

Please talk to your politicians to support this important cause for Christianity and Hellenism!

Sign the petition at https://appeals.worldhellenicdiaspora.org/

When Peter Vossos was growing up in South Dakota, his Greek heritage was not exactly foremost on his mind.

Today, the Missouri City resident feels differently. “As I grew older, I began to appreciate my Greek roots a little more,” he said. “We have a culture and history that had more impact on Western history than any other.”

Vossos decided he wanted to pass on that appreciation and knowledge to his children and grandchildren.

That's why he decided to support efforts to create the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest three years ago.

“How do we protect Hellenic culture in Houston for those of Hellenic descent and those who are interested in it?” said Vossos, who now serves on the nonprofit organization's 20-member board.
The resulting organization, based at 3015 Richmond Ave. in Houston's Upper Kirby District, hosts community activities and special events throughout the year.

Nicholas Checkles, M.D., and Anthony  Kouzounis, president of the Hellenic Cultural  Center, look at the poster for the upcoming  presentation of Euripides' “Troides” at  Houston Baptist Univeristy.
